ISTANBUL (AA) - Two people, including a demining specialist, were killed while clearing roads for a humanitarian mission in the Russian-controlled Ukrainian city of Oleshky, Russian state news agency Tass reported Friday, citing Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova.
"One demining specialist and another person were killed during the operation. We extend our condolences to their families and loved ones," Lantratova told reporters.
Lantratova also said on Telegram that the ceasefire in the humanitarian mission area remains in effect, with no incidents reported and both Russian and Ukrainian sides honoring their commitments.
She said she was traveling to Oleshky with Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets to coordinate the implementation of agreements reached with the assistance of US first lady Melania Trump.
According to Lantratova, 25 buses, with a total capacity of over 750 passengers, nine ambulance vehicles, and more than 50 healthcare workers are facilitating the voluntary evacuation of Oleshky residents.
Lubinets separately said the temporary ceasefire remains in effect and that the mission is proceeding under agreements reached with Lantratova, with the Trumps’ support and coordination.
He said the mission aims to ensure aid reaches everyone in need, particularly older people, people with disabilities, and those unable to care for themselves.
“Another equally important priority is ensuring that civilians have the opportunity to leave the city,” he wrote on US social media platform X. “Everyone who wishes to leave Oleshky will be given the opportunity to do so safely. At the same time, those who decide to remain will be able to stay and will receive all the necessary humanitarian assistance.”
A ceasefire brokered by Trump between Russia and Ukraine in Oleshky, which Moscow took control of in 2022, took effect at 0100GMT Tuesday to facilitate humanitarian aid deliveries and civilian evacuations. It will be in effect until 10.59 pm (2059GMT) Sunday.
