LAGOS, Nigeria (AA) - Armed men have reportedly abducted Nigerian opposition politician and presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore in the southwestern city of Ado-Ekiti, with his whereabouts unknown.
The attackers, according to a post made on his official social media handles, stormed Tawakalitu Restaurants and Catering Services on Friday, where Sowore was present, and forcibly took him away.
“Armed thugs kidnap Sowore. His current location is unknown!” one of the posts said.
The incident also left parts of the restaurant vandalised, with several tables and chairs damaged. A vehicle outside the establishment was reportedly damaged, while another had a flat tyre.
Sowore, a journalist, human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, is the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in Nigeria's 2027 general election. He has been a vocal critic of successive administrations.
His presence in Ekiti was linked to activities surrounding his presidential campaign.
The reported abduction raises fresh concerns about the safety of political candidates and the environment for opposition campaigning ahead of Nigeria's 2027 elections.
The spokesperson for the Ekiti State Police Command, Sunday Abutu did not respond to Anadolu calls and text messages for comment as of the time of publication. Meanwhile, Sowore's whereabouts remained unknown.
