ANKARA (AA) - From contemporary art in Paris and design showcases in Lagos to Metallica concerts in Las Vegas and jazz performances in Melbourne, cities worldwide will host a wide range of cultural events this week.
- Art and exhibitions
Art Basel Paris will return to the Grand Palais from Friday through Sunday, bringing together more than 200 galleries from 41 countries and territories.
The fair will be divided into three sections covering established galleries, emerging artists and specially curated presentations.
Its public program will extend across nine Paris landmarks from Wednesday, featuring works by Robert Indiana, Tracey Emin, Niki de Saint Phalle and Yinka Shonibare.
Turkish contemporary artist Kutlug Ataman’s video installation Kuba will be displayed at the Chapel of the Petits-Augustins at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. The work is built around interviews with residents of an Istanbul neighborhood and examines identity, community and displacement.
In New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art will open Designing the Gilded Age: Drawings from the Studios of Louis C. Tiffany on Thursday.
The exhibition brings together nearly 120 works, including rarely displayed and newly conserved drawings that reveal the creative process behind Tiffany Studios’ stained-glass windows, lamps, mosaics and interiors. It will remain open until Feb. 7.
Design Week Lagos will continue across the Nigerian city until Sunday. Held under the theme Making a New Africa, the festival includes exhibitions, trade showcases, talks and training programs exploring African design, manufacturing and sustainable economic growth.
- Film and television
The 21st Rome Film Fest will enter its final week before concluding on Sunday at the Auditorium Parco della Musica and other venues across the Italian capital.
The program features international competition titles, public discussions, special screenings and tributes. This week’s events include a Monday screening of Make Some Noise: Mano Negra!, focusing on the French-Spanish rock group, and a Friday program celebrating pioneering women in early cinema.
- Concerts
Metallica will continue its Life Burns Faster residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas with two performances Thursday and Saturday. The band has prepared separate setlists for the two shows as part of its No Repeat Weekend format, with visuals created for the venue’s wraparound display and immersive sound system.
At Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Andrew Bird will perform with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on Friday. The venue will also present A Symphonic Ballet with Elim Chan on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, while French organist Lucile Dollat will give a recital Sunday.
Dubai Opera’s program will begin with a symphonic concert by the Gipsy Kings on Thursday. Indian singer-songwriter Prateek Kuhad will bring his Full Moon Chamber Tour to the venue Saturday, followed by the classical program Romantic Masters on Sunday.
The Melbourne International Jazz Festival will also continue through Sunday. Grammy-winning pianist and composer Kris Davis will perform with students from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music on Wednesday, while South African trumpeter and vocalist Mandisi Dyantyis will appear at the JazzLab on the closing night.
At the Sydney Opera House, the 70th-anniversary staging of the musical My Fair Lady will take place Friday and Saturday. The Sydney Symphony Orchestra will also be performing John Williams’ Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back score live alongside screenings of the film from Wednesday through Saturday.
