ISTANBUL (AA) - Belarus on Sunday urged its citizens to avoid nonessential travel to France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Albania amid protests over pensions, housing, education and corruption.
The Foreign Ministry said the political situation in several European countries had “deteriorated sharply,” citing mass demonstrations, alleged disproportionate use of force by law enforcement and arbitrary detentions.
It warned that curfews and states of emergency could be imposed in affected countries, potentially disrupting public transportation, internet access and communications.
Belarusian citizens already in those countries were urged to exercise caution, avoid large crowds and protest areas, and follow updates from local authorities and Belarusian diplomatic missions.
The ministry also advised citizens to leave the countries through available commercial routes if the situation deteriorates further.
“We also draw attention to the possibility that consular and legal assistance may be less accessible because Belarusian diplomatic missions in these countries have limited staff. We recommend saving the emergency contact details of these missions in advance,” it added.
