ISTANBUL (AA) - A Brazilian city councilwoman was injured and hospitalized late Saturday after a group attacked a campaign sound truck during a political rally in Minas Gerais state.
"It is unacceptable that people are attacked for expressing their political positions," the press office of Councilwoman Iara Pimentel said in a statement, emphasizing that the assault represents a direct threat to democratic participation.
The incident occurred on Avenida Sanitaria in the city of Montes Claros following a demonstration supporting Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva ahead of runoff elections on Sunday.
Demonstrators hurled glass bottles, bricks and blunt projectiles at the sound truck carrying Pimentel and other participants, striking the councilwoman in the face. Several participants marching in the campaign event also sustained injuries.
Emergency personnel from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) treated Pimentel at the scene before transferring her to a local hospital for medication, diagnostic examinations and medical observation.
Denouncing the normalization of partisan aggression, Pimentel's office demanded an exhaustive investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible.
