ISTANBUL (AA) – China’s foreign minister on Friday urged countries to uphold the central role of the UN, strengthen the Security Council's rapid response capacity, and address the "legitimate" concerns of developing nations, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency.
Wang Yi made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Global Governance Forum (Xiongan) in Xiongan New Area, Hebei, with nearly 400 representatives from more than 90 countries, as well as international and regional organizations, attending the forum.
Wang called on major countries to "set an example" in upholding equality, credibility, moral principles, and cooperation, saying it was "the only way to bring about a world where all countries coexist in harmony and all nations thrive in mutual appreciation."
"All parties should adhere to a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security and resolve differences and disputes between countries through peaceful means to safeguard peace," said Wang.
He stressed the need to strengthen the Global South's representation and voice in international affairs, advance reforms to the international financial system, boost developing countries' representation on the Security Council, and make full use of emerging multilateral cooperation mechanisms.
Wang also urged countries to improve governance rules in emerging fields, promote international cooperation in areas such as the deep sea, polar regions, and outer space, and establish an artificial intelligence governance framework based on broad consensus.
