ISLAMABAD (AA) - China on Wednesday pledged to play an active role in promoting peace talks to resolve the Ukraine conflict, following US President Donald Trump’s remarks expressing openness to a trilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a regular news briefing in Beijing that China’s position on the Ukraine crisis remained “consistent.”
She said Beijing would continue playing “an active role” in promoting negotiations toward a “political settlement of the crisis.”
However, Mao said she had no information regarding the proposed “trilateral meeting.”
Trump said Monday he was open to meeting Putin and Xi, although he had not agreed to any such summit.
The US president said nuclear disarmament, rather than Ukraine, would be the meeting’s principal focus, adding that he would do anything possible to end the war, regardless of whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy participated.
Separately, Putin reportedly proposed holding the three-way summit during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in Shenzhen, China, on Nov. 18-19.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged discussions about a possible meeting but said no agreement had been reached on its agenda or arrangements.
