ISTANBUL (AA) - Denmark’s Defense Ministry said Thursday that it is acquiring two types of long-range precision missiles to strengthen its defenses and NATO’s collective deterrence.
The acquisitions include the Joint Strike Missile, manufactured by Norway’s Kongsberg for use on Danish F-35 fighter jets, and the land-launched Anthem cruise missile from the American company Covenant.
The ministry said the weapons use advanced navigation technology to strike targets precisely over long distances, enabling Denmark to deter attacks and, if necessary, retaliate deep inside enemy territory.
Defense Minister Jeppe Bruus said the acquisitions followed recommendations from the chief of defense.
“The acquisitions are a significant step towards making Denmark better able to defend itself, lifting our share of the burden in NATO, and at the same time we are sending a strong signal that we have the ability to strike back,” said Bruus.
The ministry described the missiles as capabilities sought by NATO that would contribute to Denmark’s security.
It did not disclose the value of the acquisitions, the number of missiles or a delivery timetable.
