KHARTOUM, Sudan / ISTANBUL (AA) - A drone strike hit a power station in northern Sudan early Sunday, sparking a fire and triggering loud explosions, witnesses told Anadolu.
The attack targeted the Abu Hamad power station in River Nile state, about 334 miles (538 kilometers) north of the capital, Khartoum, according to witnesses.
They said loud explosions were heard around the facility as flames engulfed parts of the station.
Videos circulated by activists on social media showed a large fire at the power station.
The latest strike brought to 12 the number of power stations targeted by drone attacks across six Sudanese states since Monday.
The affected states include Khartoum, Gezira, Sennar, Gedaref, River Nile and Red Sea.
There was no immediate comment from Sudanese authorities on the attack or the extent of casualties and damage.
- Power infrastructure targeted in series of drone strikes
The latest attack followed another drone strike on Saturday targeting the Hayya power station in Red Sea state, a facility still under construction.
The attacks on power infrastructure come amid the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The two sides have been fighting since April 2023, when disagreements over the integration of the country's military forces escalated into armed conflict.
The war has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced around 13 million, amid a worsening humanitarian and hunger crisis.
