ISTANBUL (AA) - Former Premier League footballer Jermaine Pennant said he required more than 50 stitches after being attacked by a German Shepherd while walking his two dogs in north London last week, BBC Sport reported Monday.
The 43-year-old former Liverpool and Stoke City winger said the dog latched onto his right leg and refused to let go as he attempted to protect his dog, King.
Pennant said King intervened and fought off the attacking dog, preventing what he described as “an horrendous situation.”
According to Pennant, he suffered four bite wounds to his right leg and received hospital treatment, where he required more than 50 stitches.
He said King was largely unharmed, sustaining only a small bite to his leg, but was covered in blood during the incident.
“At this point I forgot the agony I was in, and my heart sank, but it wasn't King's,” Pennant said in a post on Instagram.
Pennant said he chose not to report the attack to police and did not provide further details about the German Shepherd.
“So I was attacked by a German Shepherd, I tried to protect King but the dog got my leg,” he said. “I was on the floor with the dog still attached with no sign of letting go, until King intervened.”
Pennant shared a photograph of himself with his leg bandaged while sitting alongside King and thanked his partner, Mimmi Montgomery, for caring for them.
Pennant made 231 Premier League appearances during a 19-year professional career before retiring in 2018. He currently works as a football commentator for Talksport.
