ISTANBUL (AA) - Italian authorities have identified 1,339 people and reported 71 to judicial authorities for road blockades staged by truckers protesting rising fuel prices, the Interior Ministry said Wednesday, according to the ANSA news agency.
An additional 242 people received administrative fines as authorities stepped up efforts to clear blockades, particularly in the southern Campania region.
The ministry also arranged police escorts for transport vehicles to help maintain deliveries and loading operations, including for 500 vehicles in Campania.
Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi convened a meeting with prefects and police chiefs in affected provinces, urging vigilance for possible criminal infiltration of the protests.
The blockades have disrupted the movement of goods in southern Italy, raising concerns about supplies to supermarkets and fuel stations.
