ISTANBUL (AA) - Japanese internet service provider GMO Internet Group Inc., hit by a cyberattack, said Wednesday that a website containing information a hacker claimed belonged to a customer became inaccessible after the company took measures, according to Kyodo News.
"We have confirmed that the offender's website domain has been taken down," said GMO.
A hacker believed to be behind a recently discovered unauthorized access incident involving GMO's foreign exchange trading service disclosed the customer’s information Tuesday after the company failed to respond to a ransom demand.
The provider said it would take action if it found another website.
The customer whose information was allegedly posted on the website is under Metropolitan Police Department protection due to safety concerns, Kyodo News reported, citing an investigative source.
The person told investigators that the personal information posted on the website is "partially correct and partially wrong," according to the source.
Police asked GMO to assess the extent of the damage.
The unauthorized access targeted the Onamae.com Desktop Cloud service.
An investigation following a customer inquiry confirmed Oct. 20 that a third party had installed an unauthorized program on servers of some customers.
Japan Airlines also reported Wednesday that personal information from 92,000 customer records may have been leaked, including passport numbers and nationalities of 2,000 customers.
The airline is among the latest Japanese companies to report an unauthorized access incident.
