KHARTOUM, Sudan / ISTANBUL (AA) - Nearly 120,000 people have been displaced from various areas of Sudan’s southeastern Blue Nile state since January, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Thursday.
The UN agency said in a statement that 119,782 people, representing 23,598 families, were displaced across the state between Jan. 11 and Oct. 15, 2026.
The number of internally displaced people in Blue Nile rose by 21% compared with the agency’s previous update on Aug. 23, when 99,277 people had been recorded as displaced.
The displaced population is spread across seven locations in the state, including the capital Damazin and Roseires, the IOM said.
Women and girls account for around 56% of those displaced, while males make up 44%, according to the agency.
Children under the age of 18 represent around 45% of the total displaced population.
On Sept. 13, the IOM said 99,277 people, or 19,497 families, had been displaced in Blue Nile between Jan. 11 and Aug. 23.
Blue Nile has witnessed an escalation in fighting in recent days following attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its ally, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, on several areas in the state.
Sudan’s humanitarian crisis has continued to worsen amid the war between the army and the RSF, which began in April 2023 over disagreements concerning the integration of the military establishment.
The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced around 13 million.
