ISTANBUL (AA) - Online resale platform Vinted has removed listings suspected of offering goods stolen during looting that took place amid protests across France on Oct. 17, saying it applies a “zero tolerance” policy, French public broadcaster Franceinfo reported Monday.
Makeup, perfumes, clothing and electronic devices were among the items reportedly put up for sale on secondhand platforms following the looting of shops over the weekend.
Vinted said its teams had acted immediately to identify and remove listings suspected of involving stolen goods and had strengthened checks on suspicious advertisements.
The company said it was cooperating with French authorities and law enforcement agencies.
Accounts found to have violated its rules could face sanctions, including permanent bans.
The issue has prompted calls for greater cooperation between online resale platforms and the government to help identify people attempting to sell stolen merchandise.
French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said Monday that the government would issue a statement on the matter, while Minister Delegate for Digital Affairs Anne Le Henanff was working on possible measures.
EBay said it provides law enforcement with a dedicated portal to facilitate requests related to investigations.
The developments followed widespread looting during protests against the cost of living on Oct. 17, when shops in several French cities were targeted.
