MOSCOW (AA) - Russia on Wednesday summoned Latvian Charge d'Affaires Ramona Krasovska and lodged a strong protest over Latvia's demands to dismiss all employees of the social security department within the consular section of the Russian Embassy in Riga.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the move threatened pension and social security provision for nearly 6,000 Russian pensioners and their family members residing in Latvia.
"The actions of the Latvian authorities contradict the country's obligations under the 1994 Russian-Latvian intergovernmental agreement on social security for Russian military pensioners and their family members," it stressed.
The Russian side had always fully and consistently fulfilled its obligations to Russian military pensioners and their family members living in Latvia, the ministry said.
It added that the Latvian authorities bore full responsibility for "an artificially created crisis" over military pension payments.
The ministry urged Latvia to strictly adhere to the letter and spirit of the intergovernmental agreement, and it handed the Latvian representative a diplomatic note.
