ISTANBUL (AA) - American actor Walter Koenig, best known for playing Ensign Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek television series and films, has died at age 90, his talent agency announced Monday.
Galactic Productions said Koenig died Sunday night at his home in North Hollywood, surrounded by his daughter and niece.
"Today we mourn the passing of Walter Koenig, whose talent, warmth, and unforgettable performances left a lasting mark on generations of fans around the world," the agency said on US social platform Facebook.
Born in Chicago on Sept. 14, 1936, Koenig graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1958 and later studied acting at New York's Neighborhood Playhouse.
He began appearing on television in the early 1960s before joining Star Trek in its second season, in 1967, as Chekov, the young Russian navigator aboard the USS Enterprise.
Introduced during the Cold War, Chekov was widely seen as a symbol of a future in which geopolitical rivals could work together.
As one of the youngest cast members on the series, with his Beatles-like hairstyle, Koenig's addition to the show was also meant to help attract a younger audience.
Koenig reprised the role in seven Star Trek films, beginning with Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979. He also wrote about the franchise in his 1980 book Chekov's Enterprise.
Beyond Star Trek, he portrayed the recurring character Alfred Bester in the science-fiction series Babylon 5.
Koenig also wrote television scripts, taught acting part-time, and remained closely connected with fans through numerous appearances at conventions.
