ISTANBUL (AA) - Tottenham Hotspur claimed their first Premier League victory of the season on Monday, defeating newly promoted Coventry City 3-1 in London in the final match of Week 7.
Roberto De Zerbi's side entered the match at the bottom of the standings with just three points from six games, having endured one of their worst starts to a league campaign.
Coventry created the first dangerous opportunities, with Tatsuhiro Sakamoto delivering a threatening cross in the seventh minute that nearly resulted in an own goal before goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky gathered the ball.
Two minutes later, Sakamoto saw his shot deflected over the crossbar after combining with Brandon Thomas-Asante.
Despite the visitors' early pressure, Tottenham broke the deadlock in the 14th minute through James Maddison.
Mohammed Kudus raced down the right flank, beat his marker and laid the ball off to Maddison, who curled a powerful right-footed strike from outside the penalty area into the top left corner beyond goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.
The goal was Maddison's first in the Premier League since February 2025, ending a 610-day league scoring drought during which he endured a lengthy injury-related absence.
Coventry responded five minutes after the interval when Jack Rudoni capitalized on a series of deflections inside the Tottenham penalty area before firing a shot past Kinsky to level the score at 1-1.
However, the hosts regained the lead in the 58th minute through Omar Marmoush, who scored his first goal for the club.
The Egyptian forward turned his defender near the left edge of the penalty area before curling a powerful effort into the far right corner, leaving Rushworth with no chance.
De Zerbi introduced Ben Davies in the 69th minute after Andrew Robertson suffered an injury.
Tottenham also welcomed back Dejan Kulusevski late in the second half, with the Swedish international replacing Marmoush to make his first appearance in 526 days following a lengthy absence through a knee injury.
Substitute Mathys Tel nearly extended the lead in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, curling an effort narrowly wide of the post.
Davies sealed Tottenham's victory in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time after Coventry failed to clear Tel's cross, with Dominic Solanke touching the ball into the defender's path.
Davies struck with the outside of his left foot from outside the penalty area, and his low effort slipped under goalkeeper Rushworth's glove and into the net.
The result lifted Spurs to 16th place in the Premier League standings with six points, while Frank Lampard's Coventry dropped to 17th, also with six points.
