LONDON (AA) - British Prime Minister Andy Burnham met the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, in London on Wednesday to discuss the situation in the Middle East and cooperation, including defense and security, the premier's office said in a statement.
Burnham reaffirmed the UK’s close relationship with Oman and the benefits it brings to ordinary people in the UK.
The prime minister noted that trade between the UK and Oman shows how the relationship is creating jobs and opportunities in both countries.
"Turning to the situation in the Middle East, the Prime Minister underlined the key role Oman plays in regional stability," said the statement.
It added that Burnham gave his thanks for Oman’s work to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as both leaders agreed on the need to keep the strait open to reduce the pressure on global supply chains and ease the effect on people at home.
"The two leaders also agreed to continue working closely together to keep their citizens safe, strengthening their existing cooperation across defence and security," it said.
Haitham bin Tarik, who is in Britain for a three-day state visit, was welcomed Tuesday by King Charles and Queen Camilla with a military ceremony at Windsor Castle.
