BEIRUT / ISTANBUL (AA) - The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said Tuesday that it is continuing its operations in support of peace and stability as the Security Council considers options for the period after its mandate ends this Dec. 31.
“UNIFIL remains committed to supporting peace and stability in the region through its mandated tasks under resolution 1701,” the mission said in a statement.
Those tasks include monitoring developments, reporting violations to the UN Security Council, liaising with the parties, supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces and facilitating humanitarian missions.
“As the Security Council considers options for the post-UNIFIL period, our work on the ground continues,” it added.
UNIFIL was established in 1978 following Israel’s invasion of southern Lebanon. Its mandate was significantly expanded after the July 2006 war under Security Council Resolution 1701.
In August 2025, the UN Security Council decided to end UNIFIL’s mandate on Dec. 31, 2026, followed by an expected gradual, safe, and coordinated drawdown and withdrawal over the course of a year.
