LONDON (AA) - A disruption affecting Google Cloud's infrastructure in western Europe caused outages at several UK and international online services Tuesday, including banking apps, retailers, and delivery companies.
The company blamed a “power event” for the widespread service disruption, saying the incident has been mitigated and recovery efforts are underway.
“We are seeing the recovery of services and are prioritizing the recovery of existing workloads,” Google said in an update on Tuesday, adding that a “full recovery” should be completed by 2 pm (1300GMT).
Financial services providers Revolut, Lloyds Bank, and HSBC were among those affected, while home improvement retailer Screwfix and delivery company DPD also experienced problems, according to Downdetector, which tracks user reports of service disruptions.
Millions of Revolut customers have reportedly been unable to access their accounts or make card payments following a system outage. The digital banking platform serves more than 80 million customers globally, including 13 million in the UK.
- Government websites
Several UK public-sector websites and court services, including NHS England, HM Courts and Tribunals Service and the government’s official website, appeared to be affected by a wider service disruption as they were listed on DownDetector.
It remained unclear whether the disruption affecting the government services was directly linked to the Google Cloud failure.
The Criminal Bar Association posted on US social media company X that the “Cloud Video Platform (CVP) is down across large parts of England and Wales since 10 a.m. Many of us today, both as prosecution and defence counsel, can not proceed with trials and other hearings. Our work to clear backlogs is hampered."
A similar internet outage occurred exactly a year ago, on Oct. 20, 2025, when more than 1,000 websites and apps, including Lloyds Bank and Snapchat, were taken offline
