ATLANTA, US (AA) - Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Friday attended the opening session of a G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in the US.
On the sidelines of the two-day gathering in the Southern city of Atlanta, Fidan met with Indonesian Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.
During the meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Fidan stressed the importance of further developing economic relations between Türkiye and Japan and expanding cooperation into new areas.
According to Turkish Foreign Ministry sources, Fidan highlighted the need to boost mutual investments and promote cooperation between Turkish and Japanese companies in third countries.
The two also discussed planned high-level visits between the countries in the coming days, as well as recent developments in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions.
The G20 foreign ministers’ meeting hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, brings together top diplomats from the world's leading economies to discuss global economic challenges, geopolitical tensions, energy and food security, freedom of navigation, and supply chain resilience.
The meeting takes place amid ongoing international conflicts, including the war in Ukraine and tensions involving Iran, which continue to raise concerns over regional stability and the global economy.
The Atlanta gathering is the final ministerial-level meeting under the US G20 presidency ahead of a G20 leaders’ summit set for Dec. 14-15 in Miami, Florida.
Separately, Fidan also held a closed-door meeting with Rubio on Friday, according to Turkish Foreign Ministry sources.
The two discussed bilateral relations as well as the ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran, the situation in the Gaza Strip, the Russia-Ukraine war, and other regional developments, the sources said.
Fidan also held sideline talks with UK's Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband.
No information was disclosed about the closed-door meeting.
The Turkish minister later attended the welcome reception hosted by Rubio.
