WASHINGTON (AA) - Officials at the US Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina terminated a Site Area Emergency late Wednesday following a fire at the Savannah River National Laboratory, saying radiological surveys detected no contamination.
The emergency was terminated at 9.45 pm local time (0145 GMT Thursday), according to a site notification.
"Protective actions have been lifted, and site barricades have reopened," it said.
The fire at the Savannah River National Laboratory has been extinguished and radiological surveys found no detectable levels of contamination, according to the notification.
The site, located near Aiken, declared a Site Area Emergency at 5.39 pm local time (2139GMT) on Wednesday after the fire was reported. Officials said at the time that there was no indication of consequences beyond the site’s boundaries.
The SRS is a major installation in the nation’s weapons complex that has supported the US military’s strategic deterrence mission for more than 75 years, according to the SRS website.
