ISTANBUL (AA) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday that Ukraine would honor the localized ceasefire in the Russian-controlled Ukrainian city of Oleshky announced by US first lady Melania Trump, stressing Kyiv counts on US mediation to work.
Zelenskyy said the truce would allow the humanitarian operation to proceed, including reopening access to the city, delivering food and medicine, and enabling civilians to leave the combat zone.
“In the occupied part, the temporarily occupied part, of our Kherson region, the Russians have mined the roads, making the situation dire, extremely dire,” he claimed.
Zelenskyy said the sides had been negotiating the humanitarian operation for some time at various levels.
“Ukraine will do its part. We count on American mediation to work,” he said.
Both Russia and Ukraine on Friday confirmed the temporary ceasefire in Oleshky. They said fighting would be halted in the early hours of Tuesday, while an earlier White House statement said the ceasefire would begin on Thursday.
