CALIFORNIA, US - OCT. 22: Pelicans have turned the damaged Pacifica Pier into a temporary gathering place as the coastal structure remains strictly closed to the public following safety concerns over its structural integrity.
The pier, situated along the northern California coastline in Pacifica, was shuttered by municipal authorities in June after inspectors discovered structural cracks and significant degradation to its support columns.
Constructed in 1973, the landmark has historically served as a popular destination for regional angling and crabbing, but human access has been restricted while the municipal council evaluates long-term restoration options.
While human visitor traffic remains halted, flocks of seabirds continue to roost along the concrete railings and deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Emergency reinforcement work is scheduled to begin ahead of the upcoming winter storm season to bolster the pier's foundation.
