TIRANA, ALBANIA - OCT. 29, 2026: Tensions boiled over in Albania’s parliament on Thursday, Oct. 29, as opposition lawmakers set off smoke bombs, lit flares, and blocked the main podium to protest alleged police violence against student demonstrators.
The disruptions erupted during a scheduled legislative session intended to debate several pending bills, bringing parliamentary proceedings to a chaotic halt. Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha blamed the government for violence against students. Lawmakers also displayed photographs they said documented police violence against protesters.
The latest protests began on Oct. 13, initially driven by student concerns over education costs, university conditions and economic prospects.
Demonstrators have also raised broader grievances over corruption and the cost of living.
Rama has rejected calls for his resignation and said he would not negotiate with those involved in violence.
