Chile creates innovative simulators to improve preparedness for earthquakes and tsunamis

CONCEPCION, CHILE - OCTOBER 28: Researchers at the Catholic University of the Most Holy Conception (UCSC) work with a seismic shaking table-considered the largest of its kind in Latin America-in the city of Concepcion, located in southern Chile near the epicenter of the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the country on February 27, 2010, on October 28, 2026. The university possesses advanced testing facilities used to study the earthquake resistance of structures, as well as risks associated with tsunamis and coastal flooding. The seismic table measures six by six meters and has a load capacity of over 40 tons. Researchers also utilize a unique 20-meter experimental flume to study tsunamis and coastal flooding; the technology behind this facility is protected by a patent granted in Japan.
