Endangered seagrass meadows and pen shells monitored in Istanbul's Tuzla district

TUZLA, ISTANBUL, TURKIYE - OCTOBER 24: A view from underwater in Tuzla, Istanbul, Turkiye, on October 24, 2026. The area is home to endangered seagrass meadows and pen shells, which are protected by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Pen shells native to the Mediterranean basin help filter seawater, while seagrass meadows produce oxygen through photosynthesis and provide habitats for marine life. A stingray of the species Dasyatis pastinaca was also recorded during a dive conducted by the General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture to monitor the populations of these species.
