Syrian mosaic artist Muhammad, who worked alongside Turkish craftsmen, revives his art in hometown Damascus

DAMASCUS, SYRIA - OCTOBER 15: A member of the Barini family works on a mosaic artwork depicting the Dome of the Rock at the family's workshop in Ain Tarma, Damascus, Syria, on October 15, 2026. The family, who sought refuge in Turkiye after leaving Syria and continued their mosaic and natural stone craftsmanship in Mardin, returned to their hometown following the fall of Bashar Assad's regime. After losing four factories established over a period of 50 years to bombardments, the family reopened their workshop, aiming to preserve their craft and pass it on to future generations.
