GAZA CITY, PALESTINE — OCT. 12, 2026: Six-year-old Sila Abu Eklein lost her right leg and her immediate family in an Israeli strike on the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City.
The attack killed her mother, father and two siblings, leaving her aunt to care for her. After nearly a month of treatment in Gaza, her right leg was amputated.
“Her leg gradually began to die. At first, they amputated her toes. Later, they began making incisions in her leg to try to restore blood circulation. The girl could no longer feel anything in it. A month and a half after she was injured, they amputated her leg,” Sila’s aunt, Yasmine Al-Ghafra, said.
“I want to be like the other girls. I want my leg back. I want to wear a shoe,” Al-Ghafra quoted Sila as saying.
Although Sila has received a prosthesis that helps her move, her aunt hopes to secure treatment for her abroad.
Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement have killed 1,522 Palestinians and injured 5,421 others, according to figures released by Gaza’s Health Ministry.
Since October 2023, Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians and injured over 175,000 others while causing widespread destruction affecting approximately 90% of civilian infrastructure.
