Cairo’s Aqsunqur Mosque preserves Mamluk, Ottoman architectural heritage
CAIRO, EGYPT — OCT. 26, 2026: The Aqsunqur Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque, reflects a blend of Mamluk and Ottoman architectural styles in Cairo, the Egyptian capital.
Built by the Mamluks in 1347, the mosque was later renovated in 1652 during Ottoman rule, when blue Iznik tiles were added to its interior.
To this day, its Mamluk-style minarets and Ottoman craftsmanship remain defining features of the mosque, making it a notable example of Islamic architecture in Cairo.
