PARIS, FRANCE - OCT. 20: Paris's historic Republic Square continues to bear the physical marks of intense unrest on Tuesday, Oct. 20, following major clashes between riot police and Yellow Vest (Gilets Jaunes) protesters during weekend demonstrations over rising living costs.
The French government announced a large security deployment on Tuesday ahead of further nationwide demonstrations planned for this weekend.
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu told the National Assembly that authorities will mount a "massive" deployment for the mobilization's second phase.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez added that the government will increase both resources and responsiveness, broadcaster BFMTV reported.
Following violent weekend protests over the high cost of living, the government extended overnight curfews in several cities for a second night.
To prevent further unrest, Paris police banned the transport of fuel and flammable gas in individual containers through Thursday.
The metropolitan measures also prohibit purchasing pyrotechnic devices and carrying protective equipment within 100 meters of high schools and universities.
A Yellow Vest coordination group called for another mobilization on Saturday, Oct. 24, following 110 weekend rallies that drew around 550,000 people across France, including 110,000 in Paris, and resulted in about 400 arrests.
