ISTANBUL (AA) - English Premier League club Aston Villa announced Friday that it will take legal action against former Liverpool defender and football pundit Jamie Carragher over “unacceptable insults.”
“Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the Club and its fans,” club chairman Nassef Sawiris said in a statement posted on US social media company X.
“Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football,” he added.
The announcement followed Carragher’s remarks on the Stick to Football podcast, where he suggested Villa manager Unai Emery could be a candidate to replace Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick.
Manchester United are on an eight-match winless run across all competitions, with Carrick under mounting pressure following a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth last Sunday.
Carragher, 48, who works as a pundit for Sky Sports and CBS, argued that football has a hierarchy in which bigger clubs can attract players and managers from smaller teams.
“Surely he would want that opportunity to manage a giant again,” Carragher said, referring to Emery.
“There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not,” he added.
The former Liverpool defender also told Villa supporters to “shut the [expletive] up,” adding: “Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.”
His comments prompted criticism from Villa supporters before the club announced its intention to pursue legal action.
* Carragher clarifies remarks following backlash
Speaking on Friday’s Overlap Daily program following criticism on social media, Carragher acknowledged that he should not have directed his remarks at Villa supporters and clarified his comments about Emery’s managerial ambitions.
“I think Unai Emery is the best manager in the league and if you’re Man Utd, thinking about getting a new manager, you’re probably going to go ‘what’s the best we can get?’” he said.
“I’m not saying he’ll go. I’m saying if it was me, I would ask the question,” he added.
Carragher explained that he was interested in whether Emery, who previously managed Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, would want another opportunity at one of Europe’s biggest clubs or preferred to remain at Villa.
Carragher also said on X on Thursday that his remarks were intended as a joke, stressing that he had repeatedly praised Emery and the club.
His clarification came before Aston Villa announced its intention to pursue legal action, to which he did not immediately respond.
