- Incumbent challenges opponent Flavio Bolsonaro to match transparency measure ahead of Oct. 25 presidential runoff

ISTANBUL (AA) - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Tuesday said he requested the top electoral authority to lift his banking and telephone secrecy covering the past eight years.
Calling the disclosure an act in defense of his own honor, Lula challenged election rival Flavio Bolsonaro to match the transparency measure.
Under the filing delivered to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and the Supreme Federal Court, the waiver permits scrutiny of bank, tax, and communication records for Lula, first lady Janja, their five children, and associated companies, conditional on Flavio Bolsonaro agreeing to the reciprocal disclosure.
Bolsonaro did not immediately accept the challenge, which comes ahead of the Oct. 25 presidential runoff. Neither Lula nor Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, passed the 50% vote threshold required for the presidency in the first round on Oct. 4.
