ISTANBUL (AA) - English Premier League club Brentford announced Monday that it is cooperating with police following an incident in which a rugby ball was kicked toward the pitch from a nearby rooftop during Saturday’s match against Liverpool.
Footage circulating on social media showed a man kicking the ball from a rooftop overlooking Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium in west London.
Another video showed a member of stadium staff removing the rugby ball from the pitch while play continued.
“Brentford Football Club is aware of an incident involving an item being kicked from a height towards the field of play during Saturday’s match against Liverpool,” the club said in a statement.
“Such behaviour is dangerous and potentially very harmful,” it added.
The club said the matter had been referred to police and that it was assisting authorities in identifying those responsible and taking appropriate action, which could result in criminal prosecution.
“The matchday safety of fans, staff, players and officials is of utmost importance, and the club will support all efforts to ensure action is taken,” the statement said.
Liverpool came from behind to beat nine-man Brentford 2-1 in Saturday’s Premier League match, with Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak scoring for the visitors after Keane Lewis-Potter had given the hosts the lead.
