ISTANBUL (AA) - Call of Duty video game makers on Friday apologized for using real footage of the deadly 2022 Seoul crowd crush in their latest game and pledged to remove it, Yonhap News Agency reported.
The footage, showing the aftermath of the disaster that killed 159 people in a narrow alley in Seoul's nightlife district of Itaewon during Halloween celebrations on Oct. 29, 2022, appears in the opening scenes of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 as part of a fictional war scenario involving North Korea.
The game depicts a full-scale invasion of South Korea by North Korea.
The controversial clip shows a paramedic performing CPR on a crowd crush victim lying in the street.
"We deeply apologize to the victims and their bereaved families who must have suffered, as well as to everyone who we have caused concern," Activision Publishing Inc. said in a notice to South Korean reporters.
"The footage will be removed in our update set to be rolled out on Nov. 12," it added.
The game makers said they had not intended to evoke tragic events, including the Itaewon crowd crush, or disregard the pain caused by the disaster when using news footage in their games.
Bereaved families of the victims have criticized the game publisher for "lacking common sense" by using such footage and demanded a complete removal of the clip.
