ISTANBUL (AA) - Formula 1 grands prix will return to the standard maximum race distance of 305 kilometers (189.5 miles) in 2028 after the limit is reduced for the 2027 season, BBC Sport reported on Wednesday.
The maximum race distance will be cut by 15 kilometers (9.3 miles), from 305 kilometers to 290 kilometers (180.2 miles), next season due to changes linked to Formula 1's new engine regulations.
The reduction is related to fuel consumption under the new hybrid power units introduced this year, which have an almost 50-50 split between internal combustion and electric power.
The power balance is scheduled to shift in two stages to 60% internal combustion and 40% electric power by 2028, allowing drivers to use maximum power for longer periods.
The change will increase fuel consumption, potentially creating problems for teams planning to carry over their existing chassis into 2027 as a cost-saving measure.
