ISTANBUL (AA) - French authorities will impose an overnight curfew in four northern communes for two nights following protest violence, public broadcaster Franceinfo reported Monday.
The curfew will run from 8 pm local time (1800GMT) to 6 am local time (0400GMT) in Lille, Douai, Wattignies and Denain, with the agreement of their respective mayors.
The measure follows violence and looting during nationwide demonstrations against the rising cost of living and fuel prices on Saturday.
Around 550,000 people participated in 110 demonstrations across France on Oct. 17, including 110,000 in Paris, while about 400 arrests were recorded nationwide, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said.
French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said Monday that he had asked prefects to introduce localized and partial curfews following the unrest.
Lecornu also announced a major judicial operation and partial unemployment measures for businesses affected by the violence.
Authorities also announced restrictions on gatherings in Marseille following the weekend's incidents.
Separately, Denain introduced a nighttime curfew from 9 pm local time (1900GMT) to 6 am local time (0400GMT) through Oct. 25.
