- ‘Dramatized narrative, whose title expressly imputes theft,’ says court in eastern India

NEW DELHI (AA) - A court in India has barred the “publication, uploading and sharing” of a documentary alleging links between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and billionaire Gautam Adani.
The Calcutta High Court in eastern India said in its order that the ban would remain in place until Jan. 31 next year, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI).
The order followed a petition by Adani Enterprises Limited against tech entrepreneur Sabeer Bhatia, who allegedly made the video, and others, seeking to halt its circulation and obtain damages for defamation.
Justice Aryak Dutt said in the order that the “impugned video is not a news report or an account of proceedings.”
“It is a dramatized narrative, whose title expressly imputes theft, and whose narration and visuals are represented as factual,” the order said.
“The respondents shall forthwith remove or cause to be removed the impugned video, and any clip, excerpt or reproduction thereof containing any such defamatory statements, from every account, channel and page owned or controlled by them,” the court said.
The order added that the petitioner’s counsel had told the court the “video contains various allegations against the petitioner, maintaining that these statements are false.”
