ISTANBUL (AA) - A 46-year-old Italian soldier was killed on Wednesday when a tree toppled by strong winds struck his car as he drove to work in Jesolo, near Venice, according to ANSA news agency.
The incident occurred as a wave of storms swept across Italy, triggering flooding and landslides in several parts of the country, according to the agency.
Authorities placed Liguria and parts of five other regions – Piedmont, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lazio and Campania – under an orange weather alert on Wednesday.
Scientists told the agency that human-induced climate change is making extreme weather events, including heat waves, droughts, intense storms and flooding, more frequent and severe.
