ISTANBUL (AA) - Manchester City and Liverpool advanced to the Carabao Cup quarterfinals after both sides won dramatic penalty shootouts against Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea respectively Wednesday.
Manchester City twice came from behind before beating Brighton 4-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at Etihad Stadium.
Malick Yalcouye put Brighton ahead in the first half before Mateo Kovacic equalized with a low strike from outside the box.
Georginio Rutter restored Brighton's lead shortly after halftime, but Vitor Reis leveled the score with less than 20 minutes remaining, scoring his first goal for City by flicking in Rayan Cherki's free kick.
Neither side could find a winner in the remaining minutes, sending the tie to penalties.
Brighton appeared to have the advantage after goalkeeper Jason Steele saved Kovacic's fourth penalty, but City goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli became the hero.
Rulli saved Brighton's sixth and seventh penalties, denying Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk after Cherki had converted City's fifth attempt.
City won the shootout 4-3 to reach the fifth round.
Liverpool also advanced after beating Chelsea on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Anfield.
Chelsea took the lead in the 38th minute when Ryan Gravenberch was penalized for a clumsy challenge on Moises Caicedo inside the box. Morgan Rogers converted the penalty into the bottom-right corner.
Liverpool were awarded a penalty moments later after Wesley Fofana was penalized for a handball from a corner. Cody Gakpo made no mistake from the spot to level the score.
Both teams had chances after halftime, with Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili making important saves to deny Rogers and Pedro Neto.
Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders also kept out efforts from Ronald Araujo and Bradley Barcola as the match remained level.
Neither side could find a winning goal in normal time, sending the tie to a penalty shootout.
After both teams successfully converted their first five penalties, the shootout continued into sudden death.
Joe Gomez scored for Liverpool before Fofana missed Chelsea's decisive attempt, sending the hosts through to the quarterfinals.
