ISTANBUL (AA) - More than 500 protesters were clashing with police at Porte de Vincennes in eastern Paris on Saturday as the capital's demonstration came to a close, the Paris police prefecture said.
The prefecture described those gathered at the site as “rioters” and said police were maneuvering to arrest those involved in the unrest and disperse the crowd.
“Police are maneuvering to apprehend those involved in the unrest and facilitate the dispersal of the crowd,” the prefecture added.
The clashes came amid nationwide demonstrations over the cost of living, education and public services, after unrest during protests last weekend.
The Paris police prefecture estimated that 110,000 people took part in Saturday's march in the capital.
Around 410,000 people took part in demonstrations across France on Saturday, according to the Interior Ministry, while the CGT trade union put the nationwide turnout at 800,000. Clashes with police, looting and vandalism were reported in several cities.
