ISTANBUL (AA) – Hollywood star Tom Cruise will receive the 52nd American Film Institute (AFI) Life Achievement Award, the organization's highest honor for a career in cinema, AFI announced Wednesday.
The 64-year-old actor and producer will be honored at a gala ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 24, 2027.
"Tom Cruise is a global icon," said Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI Board of Trustees.
"As an actor and producer, he brings an extraordinary commitment to everything he does. What I especially admire is his deep belief in movies and their ability to bring people together," she added.
Cruise, whose career spans more than four decades, has starred in major Hollywood productions including, Top Gun, Mission: Impossible, Jerry Maguire, Rain Man and A Few Good Men.
His films have grossed nearly $13 billion worldwide, according to AFI, with Top Gun: Maverick remaining his highest-grossing release.
He has received four Academy Award nominations, including three for acting and one for producing Top Gun: Maverick, which was nominated for Best Picture.
Cruise also received an honorary Oscar at the Academy's Governors Awards in 2025.
The honor comes weeks after the release of Cruise's latest film, Digger, directed by two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Inarritu. The Warner Bros. satire has struggled at the box office, grossing approximately $42 million worldwide despite a reported production budget exceeding $160 million.
Established in 1973, the AFI Life Achievement Award recognizes individuals whose careers have made significant contributions to cinema.
Previous recipients include Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Nicole Kidman and Eddie Murphy, who received the honor in 2026.
