LONDON (AA) - An independent review has been launched into the murder of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, with an initial report expected by March 2027, UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced.
The review will be led by former Conservative Justice Secretary Alex Chalk KC and will examine the circumstances surrounding Nowak’s death, including potential missed opportunities to prevent the attack and the treatment of his family by criminal justice agencies.
Nowak was stabbed five times on Dec. 3, 2025, while returning home from a night out with friends.
Bodycam footage showed police officers handcuffing him and failing to provide first aid as he lay dying and told them he could not breathe.
His killer, Vikram Digwa, is serving a minimum prison sentence of 21 years. Digwa had told officers that he was the victim of a racist attack by Nowak.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating two officers for potential gross misconduct.
Mahmood described Nowak’s murder as a “horrific and senseless crime” and praised the “extraordinary courage and dignity” shown by his family “in their pursuit of answers.”
“Henry's case has raised serious and legitimate questions about whether more could have been done to prevent this tragedy, and about the response of public authorities in its aftermath,” she said.
She added that the review would “leave no stone unturned.”
Welcoming the announcement, the Nowak family said they hoped the review would “finally uncover the full truth and deliver the accountability and meaningful change we have fought so hard for.”
“Our experience of the criminal justice system has been deeply disappointing, and we are determined that no other family should have to endure what we have,” they said.
