ISTANBUL (AA) - UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Claudio Cordone condemned Thursday the killing of a Syrian civilian with a disability by Israeli forces in the southern province of Daraa, urging Israel to respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a statement posted on US social media company X, Cordone expressed condolences to the victim’s family.
“I deplore the killing of a young Syrian civilian with a disability by Israeli forces in Jamla, Deraa, in Syria,” he said.
“My deepest condolences to the family. Israel must fully respect Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law,” he added.
The victim, Muath Salama al-Baeer, was shot dead Thursday during an Israeli military incursion into Jamla village in western Daraa province.
A relative told Anadolu that al-Baeer had a hearing disability and was unable to respond to Israeli soldiers’ orders to stop.
The Israeli military said its troops opened fire after a person approached them and failed to comply with warnings, adding that the incident was under review.
The killing comes amid continued Israeli military incursions and operations in southern Syria, particularly in the provinces of Quneitra and Daraa.
Earlier this week, Syrian media reported that Israeli forces had entered villages in Quneitra province, raided a house and carried out military activities near civilian areas.
Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024, Israel has expanded its military presence in southern Syria, including by occupying the UN-monitored buffer zone established under the 1974 disengagement agreement.
Damascus has repeatedly condemned Israeli incursions as violations of its sovereignty and called for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Syrian territory.
