ISTANBUL (AA) - US Rep. Ilhan Omar pledged to resist efforts by President Donald Trump's administration to "intimidate" her and other figures ahead of upcoming midterm elections.
"We're not going to be intimidated. We're not going to be silenced. We're not going to be scared," Omar, Minnesota's Democratic congresswoman, said in video remarks on Tuesday thanking supporters.
She asserted that the administration officials are "running scared" as voting nears.
The lawmaker maintained that public solidarity provides crucial momentum to "fight Trump and his administration," promising to campaign actively alongside voters ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections to secure Democratic majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate while holding the executive branch accountable.
Her message follows comments by Trump on Tuesday suggesting Omar could face imprisonment, not merely deportation, in connection with a federal immigration inquiry.
Earlier this month, federal agents searched Omar's residence during a probe into alleged false statements on government filings and potential conspiracy, seizing laptops, mobile phones, notebooks, and her passport.
Investigators are examining whether Omar or her late father submitted inaccurate age records when she acquired citizenship in 2000.
Omar, who entered the US House of Representatives in 2019 as the country's first Somali American lawmaker, firmly denied wrongdoing, explaining that she arrived in the US at age 12 in 1995 and naturalized at 17.
