ISTANBUL (AA) - The US Department of Transportation issued fines totaling $425,000 against Air France and KLM for operating flights under Delta Air Lines' code in prohibited airspace, according to an official statement Friday.
The department announced fines against Société Air France of $105,000 and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines of $320,000 on Friday.
The agency penalized the carriers for operating flights under Delta Air Lines' designator code in airspace restricted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The FAA prohibits flight operations by US operators in foreign-managed airspace where conflict, militant activity, or heightened tensions pose safety risks to civil aviation.
Foreign airlines operating flights with a US carrier's code must abide by these flight bans.
"Under the Trump Administration, if you fly carrying a US code, following our safety rules is not optional," US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said.
Duffy added that authorities will not hesitate to hold any airline accountable for failing to comply with agency regulations.
Both carriers were ordered to cease and desist from future violations.
