ISTANBUL (AA) - The Vatican has called for greater international cooperation to ensure that outer space remains peaceful and that advances in space technology benefit all countries, Vatican News reported Friday.
Addressing the UN General Assembly's Fourth Committee on Wednesday, Archbishop Christophe El-Kassis, the Vatican's representative to the UN, said space exploration should serve the common good and not deepen inequalities between countries.
He highlighted the role of space-based technologies in addressing global challenges, including climate change, food insecurity, water scarcity and natural disasters.
El-Kassis also warned about growing challenges linked to space activities, including orbital congestion and space debris and called for coordinated international efforts to address them.
He urged countries to strengthen cooperation and share scientific knowledge and technology so that developing nations could also benefit from advances in space exploration.
